First Sock Hop

Being the mom to a 11year old boy in 2009 I have noticed through all our advancements, technology and social acceptance much is the same as being 11 in 1982. As we approach Valentines day this February I am reminded that young hearts are as excited as the more experiences ones. It’s a day of Hope that Fairy Tales really do exist. Young and old hope is what drives us to more:-)

So back to being 11 this February I am excited to tell you all that Jordan has asked to attend his first *sock hop Valentines dance!!!*
He needed to ask for permission as he will be missing a few classes and retrieve the 2dollar charge. It’s exclusive to grades 5 and 6 and will run over the lunch period PE and music for some 2 hours to dancing. Now if I recall my first school dance I was nervous, excited and bubbling with excitement of who I could find dance with….hummmm not sure much has changed many years later except change the scene to a bar or basement with pole and add some poison we happily call alcohol….LOL!!! As I said only shades of differences between then and now.

Back to Jordan; he is full of a joy that spills over, energy that tingles and jumps off his body as he shares who is asking who and that he has opted for the plan of going single!!!!!!! WHAT did I just hear that right???? He loves to dance and wants to be able to dance with all his friends so its best if he doesn’t ask anyone to go with him. OH that a recipe for disaster!!!! So as the best I can to hold back my own excitement to know more I politely not so calmly ask about of the few girls I know he is hangs with…One I can hear the disappointment in his voice as he says she is going with another boy and the other he is adamant is JUST friends and that would just be ODD!! Please mommy you understand the JUST FRIENDS……although “Benefit programs” jump in my head and quickly get SLAMMED out of the way!! No no don’t think like that!!!

BUT All this great discovery of being 11 makes me smile, laugh, totally enjoying, even begging for all the conversation he has to offer …lapping up his every word like a puppy rushing to a bowl of milk….As I listen I start to think back to my own *first* school dance and Reo Speed wagon, Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams songs that I am sure played while we stood on the side lines scared to death to ask anyone to ‘slow” dance ….and this is why girls just dance together!! Not to mention how I am sure I had the same excitement and joy Jordan feels about his first dance. ….how exciting and how so many things continue to be the same no matter what year you are born.

Well if any of you know Jordan once he starts on a role of chit chatting he doesn’t really stop so last night I was treated to a non-stop hilarious conversation through supper and our commute….the school dance was only the beginning.

We had conversation about Hilter who at some point Jordan said LIKE ME Hitler had brilliance BUT the difference is he used his power and ideas for bad evil and I use my brilliance for the positive. The as a mater of fact statement had Bellini come out my nose, and my cheeks where aching from how long I had smiled. Something he pointed out I’ve been a bit lacking the last few weeks…..dam I hate when he pays attention:-)

So as he freely rolled from subject to subject during our 2hour supper!! Its all I can do but share this one tidbit and that my sides hurt, my smile found and no matter the stress and heavy loads we feel it continues to be worth it!! Thank God..whew!!
